At the start of any of the training programmes mentioned below, you will want to set the tone, such as being participative, using learners’ own experiences, learners being responsible for their own learning, recognising their prior learning, offering theoretical models and opportunities to link learning to implementation in the workplace. This training activity is an introduction to a programme that invites managers to reflect upon their way of working, to assess their skills and to plan changes to increase effectiveness in the future.

After everyone has introduced themselves to one another, you introduce the programme and its purpose. Participants assess their strengths and weaknesses in achieving high performance with staff and use a learning log to identify areas or skills to develop during the programme. This forms the group learning expectations. The training activity ends with a group contract for behaviour and the establishment of ground rules.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants get to know each other. The participants make their introductions, and discuss their expectations.
