This training activity raises awareness that grievances are often a result of an accumulation of smaller problems, or developing situations that suddenly become overwhelming.
In a busy working environment it is very easy to forget to show your appreciation of hard work, or to underestimate the number of hours that are being put in by people who work for you. This case explores what can happen when employees feel neglected, and continually work long hours without additional recognition or reward. Participants read a case study about the owner of a business who fails to respond to a loyal employee who is working long hours. As a result, the employee submits a written grievance. At the grievance meeting, the owner does not appear to understand her case, and she is not happy with the outcome of the meeting. Participants work through a number of multiple-choice questions, to decide what the owner should have done to avoid this situation. The trainer introduces the case, and guides the participants through the multiple-choice questions, to draw out the key learning points. This training activity is easy to introduce and can be used early on in a course, or later, to check understanding of the role of effective management in avoiding grievances. Participants work in pairs so, if used early in a course, the training activity provides a good way to encourage people who don’t know each other to work together.
