As a manager you will need to achieve results with and through the efforts of other people. To gain their support and commitment you must be able to understand and motivate them. During the last century, successions of researchers and authors have identified the principles that govern people’s behaviour and motivate them to perform in certain ways. This training activity introduces participants to the key theories and theorists, enabling them to have a greater understanding of what may and may not motivate the people in their team in any given circumstances.

You start the training activity by asking the participants to define what is meant by motivation and to identify some of the common symptoms of demotivation. You then introduce a game which is played in syndicate groups. This is designed to enable the participants to demonstrate their current knowledge of motivational theories and the key theorists with whom each is connected. During the review of the game, you have an opportunity to input any necessary theory required to complete participants’ knowledge. You conclude the training activity by giving an overview of all the theories. Participants are encouraged to draw up an action plan of how they may apply some of their learning to their workplace.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to introduce participants to key theories involved in motivation, to help them appreciate the links between the different approaches, and to assist them in identifying key components to apply at their workplace.
