Everyone takes part in negotiations, in both their private and their business lives. They negotiate over a variety of issues – cars, house sales, family matters, domestic duties, budget and resource allocations, pay and performance expectations, the price of supplies and the cost of supplying. Negotiating is a highly interpersonal activity which involves the effective application of a range of skills. This training activity looks at the key skills which underpin effective negotiating and examines the importance of their appropriate use.
The participants work in buzz groups to consider negotiations they have been involved in and to identify the skills they used or observed on those occasions. Next, they work individually to decide on the selection and ranking of their top seven from a given list of negotiation skills. They then work in groups to negotiate an agreed group selection and ranking. After a discussion of the process involved in this negotiating exercise, the groups list the problems they experienced. They then identify possible solutions and the key skills those solutions rely on. Finally, the participants consider what they have learned from the training activity and draw up a list of action points for their skills development.
