The roles taken by team members set the tone for how the team operates and functions. Sometimes, roles become stuck or disabled and the team can become stagnant. The team leader has a crucial part in promoting a healthy team. Roles taken in teams can provide an opportunity for learning and the development of the whole team. The leader's role is important in developing the use of these role skills.

This training activity begins with an introductory exercise to build trust between paired participants. These pairs work together during the observation exercise that follows. One half of the group discuss a team problem and the other half observe their partner to analyse the role they take. Feedback on role behaviour is given in pairs. This is followed by a whole-group discussion on what happens when roles become stuck or disabled in their own work teams, and their role as leader in promoting a healthy team. Small groups consider how role behaviour helps team learning and individuals then make notes about their own teams, before completing a learning log on the application of learning in their own work setting.
