Careful analysis and diary or project planning of the action points and objectives needs to take place as soon as possible after the learning needs analysis (LNA) interview if the interviewee is to make full use of the enthusiasm generated by the interview to ensure that what has been agreed actually happens. This training activity focuses on the importance of the interviewee following through on the LNA interview. This is extremely important from an organisational viewpoint as it fosters a culture of taking responsibility for one’s own development. This training activity gives participants the opportunity to work on practical exercises to determine what needs to be done, together with appropriate timescales.
You open the training activity by emphasising the importance of following through on what has been agreed during the LNA interview. The participants contribute ideas and work individually on supplied or live material as you guide them through the key stages of the follow-through session. First, the participants summarise the action points and longer-term development plans from the LNA interview, checking for SMART as they work. They then decide in which sets of circumstances they would need to approach the interviewer for clarification and the most effect ways of doing this. The participants move on to diary-plan their action points and longer-term development plans for the coming year, making a distinction between those items that can be tackled immediately and those that require a full project planning exercise. You close the training activity by taking key learning points from the participants before distributing a key learning points handout.
