Making mistakes can be painful and costly learning experiences. They can also be worthwhile learning experiences if we adopt a more open approach to understanding their value in the workplace as well as in life.

Participants begin by exploring the question of what is a risk and what is a mistake. They then complete a self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate their own approach/style to managing risks and mistakes in the workplace. Methods of turning mistakes into opportunities for development and learning are examined, and participants consider helpful and unhelpful behaviours and responses they might use in relation to mistakes made by others. Participants then move on to a case study, to put theory into practice by exploring the support mechanisms required by a team member about to undertake a high-risk activity at work. The final part of the training activity requires participants to revisit their self-assessment questionnaire and share with the group something they want to change as a result of doing this training activity.
