People often think about career options for the future without any immediate prospect of changing their jobs. They may well not even want to change jobs at the moment, perhaps preferring to improve their performance in their current employment and/or prepare for an expanded current role. There are many activities they can undertake to advance their long-term career development without changing jobs, and some of them are completely free. The best learning occurs when people are helped to use real work opportunities as part of their development.
The training activity opens with the focus being placed on learning for career development without changing jobs. Participants first look at three types of learning opportunity at work and outside work that provide solutions to their learning needs. They follow this with an exercise matching learning methods to the learning opportunities, and discuss the people who may give valuable help. The training activity closes with participants producing their own learning development plan.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to produce a personal learning plan of activities they can carry out to develop their career without changing jobs.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as part of a career development programme, where participants have produced a career plan and now need to plan their short-term development. It will be useful if they have carried out the training activity ‘Producing a career plan’. Alternatively, the training activity can be used in more general learning situations, perhaps where an organisation is seeking to increase the use of options that do not involve attendance on training courses. In either case, it assumes that participants come to the training activity having already thought through their learning needs in the context of their future career. There is not time to help participants to clarify their needs during this training activity.
