One of the hardest things for new leaders to learn is to let go and delegate tasks to others in their teams. Yet delegation is undoubtedly one of the most powerful time-management techniques available to most managers and supervisors, and also provides a framework for developing the potential of individuals and the flexibility of the team. This training activity attempts to question the standard objections to delegation, and then takes a step-by-step approach to planning and implementing it.

You lead a discussion with the group about the difficulties and hang ups which get in the way of delegation, and then look at a step-by-step approach to delegation designed to ensure that it is effective. Finally, you give the participants a framework for planning delegation and the opportunity to plan the delegation of a real task to be achieved over coming weeks.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to help new team leaders think about and plan the delegation needed to make their job easier and develop the work of their team.

Purpose: Delegation is an important time-management technique and so this training activity builds on ‘Managing yourself’ and ‘Managing time’. It is also a means of developing the potential of team members and so provides a natural follow on from ‘Learning to lead’, which concerns the team leader’s personal development. In addition, delegation represents a significant stage in the leadership of teams and so this activity follows directly on to ‘What kind of leader can you be?’, ‘Leading the team’ and ‘Learning to let go’. Finally, ‘Coaching for growth’ is the natural follow-on to this training activity since good coaching skills are essential for effective delegation
