Managers need to achieve results with and through the efforts of other people. In order to get the best out of themselves, their team and their colleagues, they need an understanding of motivation to help achieve results. This training activity provides an introduction to the key concepts of both management and motivation. It offers an opportunity for participants to rate themselves in key aspects of motivation and helps them to produce an action plan that will assist them in developing themselves as motivational managers.

You open the training activity with a discussion about what is meant by the term ‘management’; you compare participants’ ideas with popular definition. The link between managers achieving the desired results and the central role of working with people is established. You then introduce some research, which confirms that effective people management can make a difference to the performance of any organisation and that the most effective way of managing them is by motivation in order to gain their commitment. This is followed by a discussion, which explores what is meant by the term ‘motivation’, illustrating that it is a complex and individual process. After that, the participants will work on a self-assessment questionnaire that will enable them to rate how effective they are as motivational managers. They then work in small groups to discuss their ratings and identify an action plan to build on their strengths and overcome their weaker areas. These plans are presented to the rest of the group during a plenary review.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to introduce participants to the strong links between management and motivation. The participants will have the opportunity to define both terms and to rate their strengths and weaknesses as motivational managers.
