There are times for all of us when we cannot make ourselves understood. Sometimes this is due to our own lack of clarity, at other times due to inattention on the part of the listener, or sometimes because we are not effectively picking up clues and signals from the other person. The confusions that arise from lack of understanding can lead to unnecessary use of the disciplinary procedure. This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to consider their own listening skills and to practise establishing rapport with other people.

Following a brief introduction, participants complete a short self-assessment exercise on the effectiveness of their listening skills and then move into a listening skills exercise, in groups of four. For part one of this exercise, the listener is briefed to be ineffective in their listening, and for part two, the listener (a different participant) is briefed to be as effective as possible in listening. Participants review each part, in their groups of four, to identify key learning about effective listening; this learning is summarised and consolidated during the review. Participants then listen to three very different accounts of a ‘perfect holiday’ and choose their preferred account; they move on to identify the crucial differences between the three accounts and to consider how they can more effectively build rapport with others, both in general and also during the disciplinary process. The training activity ends by participants revisiting their self-assessments and completing a learning log.
