How we make decision as a team has an effect on the outcome of our tasks; sometimes the outcome is more successful than others. In this training activity, the group will be set a problem that has to be solved by coming to a consensus decision.
Start by explaining that the purpose of this training activity is to explore the idea of making decisions in teams. You give the team their brief and show them the ‘rapids’ they have to cross before asking them to think, individually, about how they would tackle the problem. They then work as a group to cross the ‘raging rapids’ using the materials provided and, naturally, under the restrictions set by you. They must make all their decisions through consensus. Once the exercise is completed, they analyse the event and compare their individual decision making with the team process. A synergy exercise illustrates the power of consensus decision making and participants are then asked to consider how to apply what they have learned to the workplace.
