Secondments and job rotations are an excellent way of developing new skills, raising awareness of the issues faced by other departments and improving communication throughout an organisation. Classic ‘them and us’ situations can often be tackled by giving people an opportunity to genuinely walk in another person’s shoes for a period of time, gaining understanding of the demands of the job and how their actions can make life easier or more difficult when they are operating in their normal role. This training activity looks at the benefits of secondments and job rotations and encourages participants to develop actual proposals based on their ideas and discussions.

If possible, gain agreement from senior management that secondment and/or job rotation programmes are potential development methods for your organisation and that proposals from the participants will be seriously assessed. You introduce the topic of secondments and job rotations, giving details of how seriously their proposals will be treated, as outlined above. Lead a brainstorm to generate ideas on the benefits of secondments and job rotations, to come up with some skills that could be developed and to identify specific potential secondments and job rotations. The participants then work in groups to develop professional proposal documents for their chosen secondments of job rotation programme. A plenary discussion follows, where any issues involved with actually preparing the proposal document are addressed and ideas on the actual proposals are shared. You explain the next steps which will result in the actual proposals being put forward to senior management for assessment. You then take one or two key learning points from each person before distributing and commenting on a key learning points handout where appropriate.
