What is the best way to deal with staff who are sick? Staff who have occasional weeks off sick, staff who have the odd day off each month – what is the best tactic? If you do decide to consider disciplinary proceedings, what do you need to do? How do you manage the process? This training activity offers a diverse range of scenarios to problem solve and then takes participants through a detailed case study involving using the disciplinary procedure.
Following a brief introduction to the purpose of the training activity and the core purpose of sickness absence management, participants problem solve a range of different ill-health scenarios, in small groups. Once they have given their feedback on these scenarios they continue to work, in groups of three, in details on one of the scenarios. This involves holding a prepared meeting between a staff member and a manager, with an observer observing use of listening and rapport-building skills. The groups of three feed back on their use of skills and then make a decision on the way forward in this case and participants move on to identify good practice in holding a disciplinary interview. The training activity closes with a short trainer presentation to confirm good practice in holding a disciplinary interview.
