This training activity will help increase participants’ ability to manage their people without using manipulation.
You start the training activity by leading a discussion which identifies the importance of the style a manager uses to achieve the purpose of their job. You help the participants to identify and explore three different styles of behaviour, and the underlying influences that affect a manager’s approach are discussed. The participants then take part in a group exercise which helps them to define each category and recognise typical behaviour and consequences of using that style. The rights and obligations that an assertive manager can expect and owes to their staff are listed, before you move on to discuss how best the participants can manage people who have authority over them at work. You help the participants prepare a checklist of behaviours to use before and during any potential confrontation with their boss. This is followed by a practical role-play exercise which gives participants the opportunity to gauge the effectiveness of each style of behaviour and to try out the assertive checklist. You conclude the training activity by generating a key point summary which identifies action plans for being an assertive manager at work.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to help participants learn how to manage others without manipulating them.
