How do you manage conflict? What are the core skills and processes for managing conflict? To what extent do you currently use these skills and processes to maximum effect? The starting point for developing effectiveness in managing conflict is to identify the core skills; it is then possible to analyse existing strengths and weaknesses and areas for development.
Once you have briefly introduced the purpose of this training activity, you start off with a lively snowball exercise, where the participants identify the core skills for managing conflict. These skills are reviewed during a plenary session and the group then move on to identify the core processes for managing conflict, based on the work that they have done in the snowball exercise. If this training activity forms part of a programme on managing conflict, you might want to provide an opportunity (possibly building on the self-assessment from ‘Opportunity or threat?’) for the participants to assess their strengths and weaknesses in using the core skills and processes. The training activity closes with the participants completing a learning log. This is provided in two versions – one including and one excluding the self-assessment exercise. Finally, you give a short summary of the core skills and processes.
