Managing diversity is about valuing differences. It is about treating people with dignity and allowing everyone to be able to perform to their level of ability. From the organisation perspective it means improved effectiveness and efficiency; for example customer relations can be much better. There has been a significant change in the expectation of customers in recent years. Both internal and external customers expect customer care, and they are themselves diverse, reflecting the structure of society in general. Diversity differs from the traditional view of equal opportunities because it covers a much wider framework than legal requirements; it is an important change of emphasis. All employees must accept the differences between individuals and the value the benefits that such diversity brings.

You begin this training activity asking the participants to consider what managing diversity means before defining the term. They then engage in an exercise concerned with the differences between human beings and money and examine the key points of difference. The participants go on to explore differences between individuals and between groups of people and the effects of those differences in the workplace. In the final exercise, you encourage the participants to reflect on what an understanding of diversity can do for an organisation.
