Do your discussions with staff always proceed smoothly, or are there occasions when staff have reacted emotionally? This training activity uses examples to show that some discussions have the potential to arouse reactions that managers may find difficult to control.
This training activity requires participants to identify the appropriate behaviour and the communication skills needed to prepare mentally for a discussion that has the potential for interpersonal conflict. The training activity can be used on its own or it can be linked with ‘Developing your workforce’, ‘Setting up a coaching discussion’ and/or ‘Conducting a coaching discussion’.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers acting as facilitators, but managers, coaches, colleagues or consultants can readily facilitate this training activity.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to explore how to handle their feelings and how to deal with difficult reactions from an angry older member of staff during a face-to-face discussion. The case study is followed by a role-play, so that participants can put into practice, in a risk-free, practical setting, the appropriate behaviour and communication skills of which they have been discussing the theory. The training activity can be used on its own, or it can be linked with ‘Developing your workforce’, ‘Setting up a coaching discussion’, and/or ‘Conducting a coaching discussion.
