Harassment from colleagues, seniors and juniors is always difficult to mange. As an individual and as a manger, what is the optimum response? Can you, as a manager, ignore it? This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to consider responses to a variety of forms of harassment, from people in different positions in the organisational hierarchy. Responses may include taking formal disciplinary action. Managers are sometimes unclear as to what are the principles that underpin any disciplinary action, and this training activity provides an opportunity to recognise these principles. This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to practise managing possible value conflicts in harassment situations.
Following your brief introduction to the purpose of the training activity, participants form small groups to develop strategies for managing a range of harassment scenarios. Following their feedback and a brief reflection on managing value conflicts, in the whole group you work to identify good practice in managing harassment. Next, participants consider a two-part case study, identifying in detail the strategy to adopt in a case of alleged sexual harassment, moving on to list the issues that need to be taken into account in managing harassment and the principles that underpin the disciplinary interview. The training activity closes with a short trainer presentation of the issues and the principles involved, and with the participants completing a learning log.
