From time to time, we all experience inner conflicts. Perhaps our values are different to those of our colleagues or of the organisation; perhaps we have different motivations for working; perhaps we just ‘see the world’ in different ways. Inner conflict can make us indecisive; we might get bogged down in situations and be unable to see the way forward; we might get unaccountably angry. When we experience inner conflict, we are unlikely to be as effective as we normally are, or to be able to use our full repertoire of skills. This training activity is an opportunity for the participants to identify their own inner conflicts, and to consider how they can best manage them in order to remain as fully effective as possible.

You introduce the purpose of this training activity and lead into the exercise. The participants depict themselves dealing with conflict in whatever way feels appropriate for them. They then note their inner conflicts and work in pairs to consider how to manage or minimise these inner conflicts. In the whole group, the participants reflect on the experience of doing the exercise and discuss strategies to manage and minimise their inner conflicts.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as an opportunity for participants to identify their own inner conflicts, and to consider how they can best manage them in order to remain as full effective as possible.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers during a programme on managing conflict. (It is best not used too early in a programme, to allow the participants’ time to recognise their skills and to feel at ease in starting to recognise and manage inner conflicts.) It is quite a short training activity and involves drawing. Use it to introduce a change of pace and a different process for learning into a programme. This training activity can also be used in programmes on negotiating skills, team working, team leadership, and personal development.
