One of the key performance management skills any manager needs is the ability to keep all staff members focused on the issue, in a way that helps them to explore the subject fully. It is likely that if you have successfully helped a staff member to focus on the issue, they will identify for themselves what needs (or does not need) to happen next. In this way they become actively involved in the solution and therefore more likely to be committed to achieving it.

You start with a brief introduction to the training activity and its purpose; this is followed by a short questioning game. Participants move on to identify different types of questions and their effects. Next, participants work in pairs and use open and probing questions to help each other to focus on a specific issue of concern to them. The training activity concludes with participants summarising their learning.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants identify and practise using probing questions to help others problem solve.
