Every organisation has overt and covert performance standards. In some cases the overt standards are quite explicit; in other cases the overt standards, let alone the covert ones, are not explicit. Managers may need to specify their expectations of staff and set standards to ensure that performance is appropriate; this may be performance with customers or teams. This training activity is an opportunity for participants to work through a case study to practise setting and monitoring performance standards with a staff member, with a view to avoiding use of the disciplinary procedure.
You introduce the purpose of the training activity and lead directly into a three-part case study. Each of the parts link together and takes participants through the different stages in managing performance, setting performance standards with a staff member whose performance is less than fully competent. For parts one and two of the case study, participants work in small groups, problem solving. During part three, two participants role-play a meeting between a manager and one of their staff whose performance has not been satisfactory; this meeting is watched by two observers who provide feedback and analysis. This analysis is then shared during a whole group discussion; you may choose to offer optional input on setting performance standards at this point.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to practise giving constructive criticism and setting monitoring performance standards with a staff member, with a view to avoiding use of the disciplinary procedure.
