Think of the world of sport. Have you ever heard of the stories where tennis stars and golfers fly out their coaches to tournaments when they are facing a tough opponent in a competition! In team sports, how can one coach change a low-achieving team into one that suddenly begins to improve and get results? Successful coaches use their coaching skills to get the best from talented players and ‘gel’ them into one playing and winning unit. In the ‘war for talent’, the managers role is the same: to identify, unlock and engage the talent potential that exists in all staff, bringing benefits for the individual staff member, the manager and the development of the entire organisation.
The training activity opens with the opportunity for participants to work in teams, to explore coaching skills and to answer the question, ‘What makes a good coach?’. Then participants are transported to the talent arena, to the amphitheatre of the Roman gladiators where solutions need to be found for two Roman coaching challenges.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to allow participants to identify the characteristics of an effective coach and examine how coaching skills can be used to unlock different examples of talent potential.
