The most important resource of the team leader is the team. Developing the potential of that team is an essential skill for a team leader. This training activity does not attempt to train the team leader to become a trainer. Being able to train the team is, of course, an essential skill, but one that requires a dedicated programme to learn effectively. Instead, this training activity looks at the team leader’s responsibility in managing the training process within the team – identifying needs, planning and organising training, and evaluating its effectiveness.
You introduce this training activity by asking the participants why they think it is necessary to develop people at all. You record their list of reasons, and then offer three methods that they can use to plan their team’s development when they go back to their workplace. The first method is for identifying development needs. The second is a matrix for plotting the skills needed by the team and the people who need to develop them. The third is the preparation of individual development plans showing how and when the needs will be met for each person. The participants then consider the methods available for meeting development needs. They work with a list of 12 different methods in order to identify the advantages and disadvantage of each, and suggest examples of where each could be used effectively. Finally, you invite the participants to discuss evaluation: first as a whole group, to determine what needs to be evaluated, and then in smaller groups, to discuss the different evaluation methods.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to outline to participants the techniques that team leaders need in order to assess the development needs of their team, and then to organise a plan for that development.
