We all have values; some will be very strongly held, some less so. It can be difficult for managers to avoid their personal values impacting upon their behaviour and decision making in disciplinary or grievance situations. This training activity is an opportunity for managers to start to identify their own personal values and to develop strategies for managing potential value conflicts. Effective support networks are vital to the effectiveness of any manager, especially when faced with potentially stressful disciplinary situations. This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to identify their support network, to note any blocks to the effective use of their network and to develop ways of removing the blocks, to ensure effective use of it.
The training activity is in three parts: following a short introduction, participants work in small groups to respond to a provocative story that you read to them. Participants then review their behaviour, in small groups, and assess the impact of values upon their behaviour. Using a learning log, they move on to consider the impact of values on their management of and behaviour in disciplinary situations and to develop strategies to manage their behaviour. Possible strategies for managing behaviour are shared in the whole group. In the second part of the training activity participants individually depict their support network, identify what blocks them from using this network effectively and consider how to manage these blocks. The training activity closes with the completion of a learning log to record necessary changes in record-keeping practice and a very short trainer summary of the importance of using support networks.
