Meditation is a system which combines posture, breathing and mental attention. There are many different systems of meditation that cover in-depth forms of practice. The purpose here is to give each individual a taste of what meditation entails and how to go about it in their own time. Meditation is an exquisite method of returning to the centre of oneself, especially when work has required that the individual always be focused outwards. It has many health benefits, such as reducing stress and high blood pressure. The ability to relax reduces physical tension in the body and therefore reduces the risk of muscle pain, including back pain and tension headaches. These are all cause of lost concentration and time off work. A relaxed mind encourages concentration and serenity.
This training activity will involve taking each person into the correct methods of starting the mediation practice. The session is structured so that the initial meditation exercises are short, building up to longer periods of time. For some people, sitting in one position for a long period to time can in itself be stressful at first. Instruct the group before each meditation exercise about what should be taking place so that everyone is clear before they start. There are also suggested exercises to be done in pairs so that partners can help each other to reach a deep state of relaxation. Once the technique is mastered it should be possible for participants to reach these states by themselves, but it helps to be guided in the initial stages.

Purpose: Meditation can be used at the start or the end of a working day, or during breaks. Once mastered, the meditative state can be entered into during periods of stress involving interaction with other individuals. The meditative state is inspirational, helping reduce tension in situations through its effect on the customer.
