Often, when a goal has been decided upon, it seems at the outset that it is a relatively easy one to meet. It is only when we ‘go for it’ that things start to happen: barriers appear from nowhere, and we have to negotiate obstacles along the way. We are often not aware that these obstacles even exist until they creep up and surprise us. When we consider our response it often includes: ‘I didn’t even consider that this could happen’ or, ‘someone up there hates me’ or, even more common, ‘something always gets in the way’. Most people would recognise this scenario, but who is in control of it? Most of the time, it is not the fault of anyone else. Often it has only taken us by surprise because we failed to plan for potential pitfalls along the way. Sometimes it takes only a little bit of forethought and creativity to avoid such obstacles. This training activity addresses this issue by showing that following a simple process at the planning stage of the project can help us to achieve our goals without having to suffer the costs, not only financially but also emotionally.

Participants write down their individual business objectives and then answer a few questions based on their strategy to meet these objectives. In pairs, they discuss their strategy in order to make sure that they have covered every possibility.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as an indoor training activity and requires each participant to identify a specific objective, and to develop a strategy to help them achieve it.
