Payment and benefits packages have their place but should not be completely relied upon to the exclusion of other motivators. They should, however, feature in any strategy designed to maximise staff motivation. This training activity helps to put the use of money as a motivator into perspective by reviewing the work of two leading motivational theorists – Herzberg and Adams. The training activity aims to clarify the idea that all managers need an appreciation of how to use the positive aspects of money to motivate their staff at work.

You begin this training activity with the trainer leading a discussion on the common perception that money isn’t a motivator. The trainer tries to put this into perspective by reviewing the work of two leading motivational theorists – Herzberg and Adams. This discussion aims to clarify the idea that all managers need an appreciation of how to use the positive aspects of money in order to motivate their staff at work. You then go on to focus an approach designed to tap into money’s motivational capability: flexible pay and benefits schemes. Having identified what these involve, the participants divide into syndicate groups to identify the range of benefits they could feasibly introduce in any organisation. Back in the main group, their syndicate views are compared with research findings on a range of benefits applied in the UK. The participants next identify their top choice of benefits. The training activity concludes with the participants either drawing up individual action plans (suitable for an open course) or collectively drawing up an organisational action plan (suitable for in-company courses).

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to put forward the idea that money can be a mixed motivator, and review the work of two leading motivational theorists, Frederick Herzberg and John S Adams.
