This training resource is intended for use by trainers on any training event that focus on motivation. It has been successfully used on training programmes such as an introduction to effective management, building and leading a team, improving staff performance, and self and time management.

You begin this training activity by leading a discussion that explores how many changes have taken place both at work and home during the past few decades. Go on to ask the participants if there has been a change of management style in their organisation or whether it is still fixated in the command and control (or ‘stick and carrot’) approach, which McGregor identified as the Theory X approach to management. His Theory Y approach is also reviewed and you will identify how the benefits of this style can work in modern learning organisations. You then link Theory Y with Herzberg’s motivators, establishing the relationship of this theory to job rotation, job enlargement and job enrichment. The participants then work in syndicate groups on a real workplace example of how they can enrich a job by applying Herzberg’s motivators. You review their ideas in a plenary session and the benefits that should come from applying this approach at work are established. The training activity finishes with participants making individual action plans describing how they can transfer their learning to their workplace.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers either as a stand-alone training activity or as part of a wider training event that explores applications of motivation in the workplace. It is an excellent follow-up to ‘Motivator or Hygiene Factor?’ If participants have already experienced that training activity, you can make economies in the amount of time spent discussing Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory. The training activity has been used successfully on a variety of related training programmes such as an introduction to effective management, building and leading a team, improving staff performance, and self and time management.
