Change causes uncertainty, stress and anxiety both in those affected and in those managing the change, even if committed to its implementation. These feelings have an impact on motivation and performance, due to a loss of self-esteem. Maintaining motivation in the workforce is a particular challenge for managers who are also seeking to implement change in working practice or organisational structures.
You begin this training activity with two short, energetic, fun-based exercises, designed to show that all types of change from ‘normal’ behaviour can be demotivating, and that successive changes can mean that workers slip further down the scale of motivation and morale. You introduce participants to the ‘change model’ which helps them understand the five stages that individuals work through when they are coming to terms with change. Each stage is discussed in relation to current and past changes of which participants have experience. You then introduce the concept of counselling skills as technique participants can use to facilitate the progress of their team members through the change model. You discuss what’s involved in using counselling skills before giving them the opportunity to use the techniques, skills and attitudes involved. You conclude the training activity with a plenary review, during which participants discuss what actions they can take to come to terms with change and how they will introduce these actions back at their workplace.
