All people are a potential source of talent. This is a recurring theme in ‘the war for talent’. It is asserted that the manager can unlock this latent talent for the benefit of the individual, the team and the organisation. Sometimes it is quite easy to spot those staff members who are highly motivated, those who give a little extra. Equally, it can be easy to spot those who are de-motivated, possibly negative about their role and the direction of the organisation. Sometimes, the de-motivated staff even eclipse the motivated staff as they absorb so much of the managers time, which is spent trying to engage them. Talent zombies can be described as those who once had talent, which is probably still there, but dead, just for the moment! They are staff who often quietly get on with the job and perform consistently well, but those who may not be marked as high-fliers. What if those who perform consistently well could perform consistently better? What if the manager could take time to get to know these staff, to understand their career aspirations, or simply just why they come to work and what could give them more satisfaction in the work they do? It may be that they can benefit from development opportunities, greater responsibilities or project work, but the bridge to them needs rebuilding and it’s the managers’ job to recreate the link.

In this training activity, the participants explore people-management skills by preparing for and then playing a game. The aim of the game is to trade-off information whereby teams compete against each other to devise the most creative and innovative initiatives that can still deliver benefits. The practical nature of the training activity requires participants to work together reaffirming important key skills, such as team building, planning and negotiating, and communication.
