Motivation is a key management competence, rightly so, as it is through a sense of motivation that teams pursue goals and achieve targets. In this training activity, the group will work as a whole to achieve a task, motivated by the team leader to achieve success.

You explain that the purpose of this training activity is to explore the issue of motivation in teams. You then give the participants a fictitious scenario that involves moving a container of ‘contaminated’ water from one place to another without spilling it (and, of course, with other restrictions!). One of the group members will act as team leader and will be responsible for motivating the team throughout. The debriefing sessions focus on the effectiveness of the strategies used by the leader. Participants then consider the issue of motivation in their own working situations and develop strategies to motivate staff in the workplace.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to help participants experience a situation where motivation is needed and explore the issue of motivation in teams.
