This training activity introduces the essential ingredients of a motivational leadership style. It puts forward the idea that leadership is different from, but supports, management – without leadership, jobs may get done but if we are after enthusiastic commitment, not mere compliance, leadership provides a key that can unlock this approach in the team.
You start the training activity with a brainstorming exercise that identifies two key aspects of leadership: motivation and vision. You discuss the idea that leadership is different from, but supports, management – without leadership, jobs may get done but if we are after enthusiastic commitment, not mere compliance, leadership provides a key that can unlock this approach in the team. You then introduce participants to a checklist of ten actions that distinguish an effective leader. Each of these is discussed in turn, and this section ends with participants rating themselves against the ten actions and discussing their results with a partner to help produce a shortlist of key action points for their self development. You then move the discussion on to exploring leadership styles. You point out that there is no one right style for every situation and every team member. Some of the influences on choosing a style are explored before you introduce the group to a matrix of four common leadership styles. Participants then take part in a short, fun exercise, during which they aim to persuade other members of the group to join them in a square representing their dominant style. When the exercise is over you facilitate a plenary review, during which participants explore the exercise and make plans for their continued development as leaders when they return to work after the event.
