What is the impact of competition within or between teams? What is the role of competition in team development and learning? How can the team leader harness competition to promote team learning and development? How can the team leader build on diversity with the team to promote team learning and development? This activity provides an opportunity for team leaders to explore these questions and to plan how to move forward.
Following a short, opening exercise to demonstrate left- and right-brain thinking and your input on thinking, the activity continues with an exercise where teams compete to finish a picture to a specification. This exercise concludes with each individual reviewing behaviour during the exercise, and considering the impact of left- and right-brain thinking on how they approached the task. During the plenary session that follows, participants list the positive and negative impacts of competition within and between teams upon team success. They then move on to consider the impact of diversity on behaviour. Finally, participants complete a learning log and summarise key learning about the impact of competition and diversity on development and learning in teams.

Additional resources: One red, blue, black, green and yellow marker pen for each team; Coloured paper for photocopying handouts on to - at least seven different colours with a maximum of four sheets of each colour.
Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to use as part of a programme on Developing Teams: The Leader's Role. It can also be used on any programme on Team Development and on programmes on Leading a Team, Managing for the First Time, Team Communications and Organisational Development.
