Pareto Analysis is a valuable technique which enables users to identify the key aspects of any problem or opportunity and so make good decisions about priority use of time and resources. Consequently, it is a powerful tool for individuals new to the leadership role who are inevitably going to be asked to make decisions and allocate resources in complex situations. This training activity uses a Pareto exercise to encourage participants to recognise the idea that there are usually a ‘vital few’ items in any situation which need priority attention and will help you achieve optimum results. The process also encourages participants to appreciate the value of good questions and avoid making a final decision or diagnosis until they have sufficient information.
You introduce the concept of the Pareto Principle with some everyday examples of the ‘vital few’ and then go on to outline the principle and its value in decision making. Next, the participants work in small teams to apply Pareto Analysis to a given set of data. After the teams have presented their findings, you end the session with a summary of the value of the Pareto approach.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to give participants an opportunity to practise asking key questions towards making valid decisions, to introduce the concept of the ‘vital few’, and provide practice in analytical and communication s

Purpose: Because of its value in establishing priorities, this training activity would provide a powerful addition to the time-management techniques as well as developing decision-making skills. The training activity also helps to build communication and presentation skills since Pareto diagrams are an effective way to communicate data and influence group decisions.
