Whether an organisation is multinational or has to work cross-culturally on projects with clients or suppliers, it is essential that their people recognise that different rules, manners and protocols apply. This training resource examines some of the issues associated with working with people of other cultures. The participants test their own knowledge, explore some techniques and receive guidance on how they can make it a success.
After a brief introduction, participants are asked to think about the impact of cultural differences on poor performance in a number of scenarios. They then examine the concept of culture and complete a group exercise looking at the influences on cross-cultural effectiveness. The participants next investigate stereotypes and the stereotyping of various nationalities. After identifying the countries they are most likely to network with, the participants prepare an action plan for finding out the information they require about these countries in order to develop strategies for coping with the cultural differences they will find. Finally, the participants revisit an exercise they did early in the training activity and decide, using what they have just learned, whether they have any better understanding of why certain incidents took place.
