There is little disagreement that coaching is a valuable management tool. Coaching, when deployed effectively, can lead to benefits for the manager, for the employee and ultimately for the organisation. A continuing theme in talent management is that knowledge, skills and experience should be shared, not only to deepen the knowledge base of the organisation, but to develop the roles of all staff. What better way to introduce this than by allowing members, with recognised high-talent potential, and the necessary coaching skills, to coach not only their team colleagues but also their managers. We can call this ‘reverse coaching’, where the traditional roles of coach and coachee are reversed. Some managers may welcome this; others may be a little resistant, some even hostile. Managers’ willingness to approach this area of talent management truly tests their commitment to winning ‘the war for talent’.

The training activity opens with the participants and trainer working towards a definition of talent. In addition, they play a game to identify the words ‘reverse coaching’. They underpin this with a brief discussion of reverse coaching, both the potential benefits and the challenges and barriers within an organisation. In the last part of the training activity, participants are transported to the world of the pyramids and ancient Egypt, where they are asked to apply their knowledge of coaching and the potential of reverse coaching to convince one individual of its benefits, and to bargain for their lives with the mummy, Tutan-talent-khamun!

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to examine their commitment to the concept of ‘reverse coaching’ where the ‘traditional’ coaching roles are reversed – the coach is the staff member and the coachee is the manager.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants of all levels of ability and experience to challenge them to explore the manager’s commitment to nurturing talent by considering the recognised management tool of coaching from a different angle, by reversing the roles so that the staff member becomes the coach and the manager becomes the coachee. This training activity can be used in training programmes on coaching, management skills, motivation, and team building.
