Why do misunderstandings occur between people speaking the same language? The reason is that because everyone lives in their own personal model of the world, shaped largely by personal experiences, the meanings given to the words they use are also influenced by those experiences. Thus a particular word or phrase can mean completely different things to different people. The ‘NLP Meta Model’ uses language to clarify; it reconnects language with experience. It is used as a tool for gaining a fuller understanding of what people say – how their thoughts are translated into words. The Greek word ‘meta’ means ‘over and beyond’, or ‘on a different level’.

Participants work in groups of three, reviewing newspapers and magazines for examples of various elements of the Meta Model. They present their findings to the whole group. Working in the same groups, participants then exchange written statements they have previously prepared on ‘the career challenge I am facing right now’. They then use the Meta Model to explore the other’s statements by questioning. Finally, they check whether the challenges seem less daunting now.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to explore why misunderstandings occur between people speaking the same language. The ‘NLP Language Meta Model’ is an effective tool for clarifying the real meaning of words being spoken.
