More than 94 per cent of the 56 million plus population of Britain is white European in ethnic origin, which means that the other three million plus are not! Some two million of those are of working age and a potential source of skills needed in a successful organisation. Yet the employment rate for all ethnic minorities grouped together is 15.0 per cent. This is more than twice that of ‘whit’ workers at 6.0 per cent (Labour Force Survey. 1999). Sometimes this resource may be under-utilised due to lack of communication, misconception or, on occasion, sheer prejudice. In a competitive economic environment, in the transition period to the twenty-first century, such waste does not make good economic sense. This training activity explores some employment issues for racial groups.
You begin this training activity with the participants considering the under-utilisation of a potential source of the skill needed in a successful organisation – ethnic minorities. The terms ‘racial group’ and ‘ethnic origin’ are defined and statistics given to show the unemployment rate for such minorities compared with that for ‘white’ workers. The participants then go on to examine some specific issues relating to the employment of ethnic minorities. Types of discrimination and its effects on ethnic minority employment are investigated by the participants through a case study. You finish with a final review and summary of the key issues to be addressed in working towards a mixed race workforce.
