Bad experiences from the past can easily create a negative belief about personal capabilities. However, if a previous debilitating incident can be reviewed and this memory modified positively, a limiting belief or mindset can be changed for the better. It can then no longer have a negative impact on present behaviour.
Participants complete a SWOT analysis on themselves in their current job. In discussion with a partner, they then select a weakness identified in the analysis and get a visual image of the last time they experienced this inadequacy. Using the Belief change checklist, their partner helps them to explore the visual image in greater depth and make positive changes to it to remove the feeling of inadequacy. Finally, participants imagine a time in the future when they will need to use the ‘weakness’ and check whether the previous feeling of inadequacy has changed.
