All managerial and supervisory jobs carry responsibility for developing people, including helping them to gain necessary knowledge and develop required skills. You can’t be an effective manager unless you are an effective developer of people.

The training activity requires participants to identify the most important stages of an effective on-the-job training session, and the behaviour appropriate for each stage. The training activity has been designed to stand alone as an introduction to the structure skills and techniques involved. It can also be linked with ‘Developing your workforce’.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers acting as facilitators, but managers, coaches, colleagues or consultants can readily facilitate this training activity.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to introduce participants to the skills needed when conducting an effective on-the-job training session with staff of all ages. The training activity requires participants to identify the crucial stages of an effective on-the-job training session and the behaviour appropriate for each stage. Participants then teach a fellow participant by on-the-job training. This training session is then discussed and techniques are further adjusted.
