This training activity introduces participants to the preparation required for effective on-the-job coaching when training staff to be more effective at work.
You start the training activity by leading a discussion which reviews a definition of management and focuses the participants’ attention on developing their staff as a central requirement to achieving business results. Next, you emphasise that training is a shared responsibility of both the training department and the line manager. You then move on to describe a systematic approach to defining training needs by identifying the gap between what the job holder can currently do and what best suits organisational requirements. You now take the participants through a series of exercises designed to identify their staff’s training needs. This involves them in identifying the key result areas of their job that support their organisation’s mission statement. They use these key areas to draw up a training needs matrix, and rate their staff’s competence to perform each area effectively. Having identified the gap, the next phase of the training activity reviews how to close the gap through on-the-job training. You start by reviewing the benefits and drawbacks of this approach before guiding the participants through the various stages they will need to cover to prepare to manage an effective training session. These stages will involve them both in identifying what’s involved in the task and in specifying the order in which it needs to be performed. Writing a training objective will give their tuition both focus and a measure of success. Finally, you cover the stages involved in planning a session by considering the introduction, main body and conclusion of a typical face-to-face training session. Having discussed the theory you then give the participants an opportunity to try it out in practice. They participate in an exercise using a real job task they have chosen before the session. They each participate as manager, job holder and observer, thereby gaining the opportunity to practise and develop their skills with constructive feedback. You finish the training activity with an exercise that encourages participants to think about what resources they will need to transfer the knowledge gained back to their workplace.
