An essential element of performance management is the setting of clear, explicit standards. If staff members know exactly what is to be done, and how it is to be done, they are more likely to achieve it. However, as setting clear and explicit standards is not easy, this training activity provides an opportunity to consider some of the issues around setting individual standards and provides a practice opportunity.

You introduce the purpose of the training activity and the key points in setting standards for individual staff members. Working in pairs, participants then complete a worksheet, to set standards for a member of staff they line manage. The pairs then join up to form fours, to critique each other’s standards and to identify issues arising from the exercise. The training activity concludes with a brief discussion of issues raised during the training activity and a summary of the key learning points.
