Appraisal has become widespread over the past 25 years, but the development has been much stronger in the white-collar sector. This may be understandable. Blue-collar workers were accustomed to being identified with a work group that was judged on the basis of group output (for example, 1,000 production units a day from the shift). Such distinctions are becoming redundant. White-collar effort is now also organised to recognise teams, with team leaders. At the same time blue-collar and all other work is evolving. Often there are no longer distinct boundaries between manual, craft, clerical, technical and professional tasks and duties. Instead there is a sort of continuum of work roles, where skills, knowledge, application and personal competence combine to create jobs of differing size, complexity and emphasis. Appraisal and performance review are intended to help harness all those things to produce greater work efficiency by motivating workers towards better results and personal development. It seems entirely feasible, therefore, to apply the system throughout the workforce in many organisations.
The training activity opens with an overview of the aspects associated with the introduction of an appraisal system. The participants work in groups identifying aspects that might require special consideration when applying performance appraisal to manual workers. They are next introduced to three widely used methods of appraisal. In the final exercise, the participants design a manual worker appraisal form. The training activity closes with a review and summary of the important points.
