The value of a performance review discussion is greatly increased if both parties prepare well. The performance review can be said to be one of the main instruments of two-way communication, and an effective and positive outcome is more likely if the two parties have prepared for the event. Lack of preparation by the interviewer will communicate to the appraisee a lack of interest on their part. On the other hand, the appraisee should also prepare to take advantage of the time available for discussion with their manager about their future.

The training activity begins with participants thinking about the benefits of preparing for an appraisal meeting with their manager. The main issues of a performance review discussion are highlighted. The participants complete a questionnaire centred on these concerns and requiring them to reflect on last year’s work. They discuss their responses with a partner and explain why they answered in the way they did. Next, the participants look briefly at the key areas to be considered by an appraiser before discussing with a partner what should be included under each heading. They then offer their ideas and receive feedback in the form of checklists of points for each of the key areas. The training activity closes with a review and summary of the key learning points.
