Much of human communication rests upon the practice of asking and being asked questions, and giving and receiving answers. In performance review situation this form of communication is the most relevant. As with all social skills there are particular ways of going about the process to produce the most effective results. The context includes such issues as: types of questions; self-assessment of questioning techniques; and the impact of question types during the performance review meeting.
The training activity opens with a consideration of different types of questions. The participants give examples of different types of questions that might arise at an appraisal interview. They next complete a self-assessment exercise about asking questions. They discuss their scores and the reasons for them with a partner. This is followed by an evaluation of questioning behaviours and the effects of different types of questions. This is to find out how to ask and respond to questions effectively. The participants go on to examine the opening dialogue of an appraisal interview. In groups, they decide the types of questions used and assess how the meeting has gone so far. The training activity finishes with a review and summary of the key learning points.
