After a training event, participants often return to work with good intentions to implement what they have learnt. Frequently, however, no action is taken and valuable lessons learnt on the course are quickly lost. Many motivational theorists recognise the importance of goals, personal growth and achievement as key motivation factors. 360o feedback is one way of obtaining information on which to base a personal development plan. In this training activity participants will put together a personal action plan based on 360o feedback.

You begin this training activity by leading a discussion that looks at the relevance of planning action on return to the workplace at the end of a course. You draw some links between the effectiveness of personal development planning and work of key motivational theorists. Participants are then introduced to the three stages involved in developing an action plan that aims to make them more effective in their work and life. They are given the opportunity to evaluate 360o feedback evidence as an aid to making personal development plans for future development. They then identify their development goals and produce an effective action plan via a series of guided discussions with a partner from the group. You conclude the training activity with a plenary review, during which the participants tell the rest of the group about their priority goal for personal development and what first step they will take to put it into practice on their return to the workplace.
