An important part of us as individuals, alongside our values, motivations and capabilities, is the set of goals that we have. Goals and targets turn our dreams and visions into reality. ‘If you don’t know where you’re going, anywhere will do’. For some people these goals are crystal clear in their mind; for others they are hardly ever thought about, except at times when important decisions have to be taken. In either case it is useful to make them explicit as part of the career-planning process, to provide a means of focus for activities that cover ‘Understanding career options’.
After a brief introduction, participants are encouraged to take part in a physical relaxation exercise to stimulate their imagination. Then they undertake an exercise that helps them to clarify their personal long-term vision. This acts as a backdrop for more focused exercises, the final one bringing them back to the practical goals they wish to carry forward to further activities in this programme.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to allow participants the freedom to think about the future in an unconstrained and creative manner, and to provide a focus for the later planning activities.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as part of a career development programme, as one element in defining participants as they currently are. It will also be useful in other personal development situations, perhaps where participants have not before considered what they want the future to hold for them. The statement of goals that participants produce in this activity will be particularly useful as input to the activities that cover ‘Understanding career options’.
