Identifying the accrued benefits of planning ahead to achieve objectives.

You start the training activity by leading a general discussion which identifies the benefits that accrue when the participants think ahead and plan to achieve their objectives rather than drifting aimlessly towards them. You then introduce the three stages of the planning process. The first two stages are dealt with briefly as these are covered in ‘Oriented to the future’. You next move on to introduce and demonstrate a popular planning technique – the Gantt chart. You start this section by introducing the technique and then develop an example on a sheet of flipchart paper as an illustration of the technique in action. The participants then practise the technique in small groups, using a real work-based project identified by a participant within each group. The results of this group exercise are reviewed in a plenary session. You finish the training activity by encouraging the reflective process, by urging the participants to use a learning review diary to review what they have learned from the training activity, and to make a note of how they could apply these points to their work.
