The brain has a way of dealing with the concept of time and how to sort and store events sequentially. This is how we know whether something has happened in the near or distant past, or is yet to occur in the future. Using a technique called a timeline, we can mentally construct an imaginary line that connects our future to our past, with events sited along its length. This gives us a very powerful internal tool for planning the future and reviewing past performance.

You explain the concept and uses of timelines and then talk the participants through the process of creating one for themselves. Individually, they will then experiment with their personal timeline to gain familiarity with it. With the help of a volunteer, you then demonstrate how to remove anxiety form a forthcoming event of a timeline. Next, the participants work in pairs to coach each other through scheduling a goal and identifying/removing any blocks to its achievement. This exercise and another optional exercise detailed at the end of this training activity could be tied in with the goal set in the activity ‘Plan your route’.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to make participants aware of the natural time-management system they have within their subconscious mind. Timelines can be used for managing projects, goals and personal time as well as removing anxiety from forthcoming events.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants at all levels. Timelines give an added dimension to existing time-management systems and project-management scheduling. They enable goals to be visualised, scheduled and the feeling of achievement to be experienced in advance, which creates a powerful self-motivating force.
